Sort, store, systemize: an easy way to start organizing
When a space feels out of control, the hardest part is knowing where to start. We use the same three steps in every home we work in, whether it's one drawer or a whole room. You can use them too.
Start small. One shelf or one drawer counts. Finishing a small space builds energy for the next one.
1. Sort

Take everything out of the space and put like things together.
Make three piles: keep, donate, toss
Put the things you're keeping into groups (all the cups, all the cords, all the hats)
Set aside things that belong in another room, and return them when you're done
You don't have to make every decision today. If something is hard to decide on, it's okay to set it in a "not sure yet" box and come back to it.
2. Store

Give each group a home.
Pick one spot, shelf or bin for each group
Keep the things you use most where they're easiest to reach
Put things you rarely use up high, down low or farther back
You don't need to buy anything to start. Shoeboxes, baskets and containers you already have work great.
3. Systemize

A system is what keeps a space working after organizing day.
Label shelves and bins so everyone in the home knows where things go
Pick one small daily habit, like putting keys in the same bowl or clearing the counter before bed
If something keeps ending up in the wrong place, move its home to where it naturally lands
Then enjoy the space. You did that.
If it feels like too much
Sometimes clutter is about more than stuff. A move, a loss, a health change or a busy season can make it hard to keep up, and that's not a personal failing. You don't have to do it alone.
