An over-the-door organizer and can racks in the finished pantry closet

Our first project: a pantry that works

Our very first Impactful Organizing project was a success!

We turned an overflowing closet into a pantry and storage area that does a lot of jobs at once. We had so much fun working side by side with this busy single mom of kids with special needs.

She had a high-risk allergen containment problem, and she needed a specialized pantry system that also made the most of her main storage space for seasonal items.

What we did

Apartments don't have much storage, so everything we added had to be easy to remove later.

Our goal was to make the most of this one storage space. What started as a cluttered closet now holds a pantry, seasonal decor, car care items, keepsakes, and more.

  • Create an easy-to-follow pantry system.

  • Create a separate space for one child's safe foods.

  • Store seasonal and other items.

Organize your own space in 3 steps

Want to try it at home? Here are the 3 steps we follow on every project.

1. Sort

  • Group like items together.

  • Toss expired and broken items.

  • Declutter and donate what you don't need.

  • Move items that don't belong in the space.

2. Store

  • Sort what's staying into categories.

  • Give each group a home in a specific spot or bin.

  • Arrange the space so your day flows easily.

3. Systematize

  • Label shelves and containers.

  • Build small daily habits to keep items in their homes.

  • Enjoy your calmer space!

What products could I use for my pantry?

We've used a lot of organizing products over the years. These are some favorites from this project:
